Fishing Reports. As of 5-9-08
Lakes and Reservoirs: The Bass bite is on! Local and valley impoundments are producing decent catches on a variety of baits such as soft plastics, spinnerbaits, crankbaits and swimbaits. Stocker trout are also filling stringers. Trolling with spoons and spinners or soaking Powerbait, eggs or worms has produced action.
Surf and Piers: Perch fishing has been good. Tides selection is the key to successful perch catches. Look for tides with 4 plus feet of water moving inbetween lows and highs. Incoming tides are the best however slack into the outgoing tide can be productive if you are in the right rip, trough or hole. Berkley Gulp blood and sand worms, shrimp and grubs are very productive. If you like natural bait we have pileworms, ghost shrimp, squid and prawns. Striper action should begin to pick up as the water warms, the swell lessons and sand crabs migrate to spawn. Striper's absolutely love to dine on sand crabs.
Bay: Rockfish opened with decent scores in the Santa Cruz area but the hot spot has been Monterey and Big Sur. High quality scores have been reported from shallow to deep water. Halibut are beginning to show off the beaches and from boats on the edges of the kelp beds. Retrieve swimbaits or jerkbaits rigged weedless off the surf. Troll or drift dead or live bait or artificials in 20-60 feet of water.
